The International Olympic Commitee does not pay athletes to compete or win.

The organiser doesn't pay either.

Some competitors pays for their own equipment, flights etc.

After all the olympics comes from the amatuer tradition of sport.

Countries and their organising bodies often pay athletes, this might include bonuses for position, place and world records.

The main earner is sponsorship deals which can be highly lucrative. Think how much Phelps is going to earn in sponsorship deals.
