"Do you think the USA can catch China in the medal count?" WHO CARES ABOUT MEDAL COUNT(except USA)?! seriously. the WHOLE world (except USA) and the WHOLE olympics committee only see total GOLD medal count. Not total medal count. US Yahoo actually rank according to medal count, when the WHOLE world and olympics committee rank in terms of GOLD medal count. China would have defintely be in 1st position as they currently have 11 more GOLD medal than US, but yahoo just shamelessly rank US first for medal count. Who cares about how many bronze or silver you have?! who cares who cares who cares? (obviously, only the americans)

In 2004 olympics US used gold medal as the measurement. because they are currently lacking in gold, they suddenly decide to CHANGE to count medal instead of gold medal?!

I seriously cannot believe such shameless people exist.

in medal count we will dominate but in gold no, China doesn't do good in track and field and in basketball and plus its to early to tell

They have the same number of medals. If you mean do I think they can catch them in the gold count? I think it will be incredibly difficult, but the chinese don't dominate the second week events as much. They don't get much out of Track and Field, we'll probably get 2 out of beach volleyball. Basketball is looking good. It'll be close!

First of all, according to the International Olympics Committee, medal count always starts with gold medals first, then silver and bronze.

There is definitely a tight competition here between USA and China. Even though China is leading 20 - 10 now, USA is much better than China in track and field. Also there are many more medals up for grab in swimming, where USA dominates. It's hard to guess until the last day of the game.

China has it's strengths. The US has it's strengths. I think it will all depend on who can win outside of those strengths. So far, China seems to be doing well but it's still early. The games go on for another week and the team sports are still going on, which the US is strong in. Also, the swimming portion is not yet over and Track and Field has not started, both of which the US pulls in large amounts of medals in.

Truthfully, using the standard international medal counting method of gold medals, USA will lose out a lot to China.

USA have half of their medals from swimming (so freaking boring watching one guy phelps winning nearly half of their medals) while China has won from such a wide variety of events: gymnastics, diving, weightlifting, judo, shooting, fencing, etc.

Also in the events coming up, though USA has track and field, even then it is heavily contested by other nations such as Russia, Jamaica, and the african countries.

You people have no idea that China's strong events are not even half way through yet, they still got gymnastics, diving, table tennis, badminton, rowing, taekwondo, heck even boxing they have seven athletes doing well in it.

Honestly, China has a whole lot more variety than the USA and I think USA will take a licking this time.

BTW, regarding the women gymnast age issue, don't even mention it, it's bad enough that we lost, if we insist that we lost to so called "underage" girls, it's even more embarrassing and show that we are whiny losers. When we lose, at least we lose in style.

Who cares about medal count. Gold medal means you won the event, and that's all that matters, is Gold.

hmmm we'll have a much stronger 2nd week than they will but idk if we'll catch them in golds. We will for sure beat them in overall medal count, though. As for the point system (Which is what I go by since it makes the most sense) they will probably beat us because they are pounding the stars and stripes out of us in the Gold medal count and those rack up some serious points.

At this point, china has 32 medals and US has 31 medals. However China has almost double the amount of gold US has.

In the past olympics it used to be that US would not only have more medals than China, but US would also have more gold medals than Chinese.

But this time, clearly the US has not been able to dominate Chinese the way they did in previous Olympics. The reason for that is that being the host gives much greater advantage to China.

Softball, Beach Volleyball, Basketball, and Track and Field all still have to be contested/completed. These are all sports where the US is extremely dominant and should give us a good opportunity to catch up.
