Question:
What I found kinda sad toward myself towards the Olympics?
2010-02-19 21:55:47 UTC
I don't know why I thought this probably because when I asked when the 2010 Olympics would be on a week ago they said the opening ceremony started at 9p.m Eastern which is 7p.m. for me so I thought the Olympics were in the Eastern part of the North America, like above New York towards Quebec and places like that. Then I got in a conversation with my brother about the Olympics where Vancouver is and he told me I was a dumb-a$$ and said Vancouver is located North of Seattle. When I found that out I thought I was the dumbest person ever I literally almost threw my drink through my living room window because I was in such denial toward myself.

Sad I know, anyway to my question: did anyone think Vancouver was located in the Eastern time zone of North America; just basing it off of what the official time is for the Olympics (or the time for NBC)? I doubt that anyone thought the same thing as I did, but I thought I should share my dumb experience.

Well I didn't think that Vancouver was in the Eastern time zone, because I live in northern NY and know the area. But I was confused about what time the opening ceremonies started because there was like the pre-show. And the prepre-show. So I thought they started waaay earlier than they actually did. But at least I didn't miss anything!

One of the favourite pastimes of Canadians is to laugh at how little most Americans know about Canada (but in a warm, friendly manner). We even had a TV show about it called "Talking to Americans".

One time they even asked President Bush what he thought of Canadian Prime Minister Poutine. Mr. Bush responded that he respected Mr. Poutine and looked forward to working with him.

Problem with that, Poutine is a famous food from Quebec involving french fries, gravy and cheese curd; and Canada's Prime Minister at the time was Jean Chretien. While it's appalling that someone could be elected president of the US without knowing the name of the leader of his closest ally, it's a fact. So lack of knowledge of Canada extends to the highest level of US leadership. You are not alone in not being unsure about Canadian geography (or politics).

But it's great you owned up to it and actually take the initiative and learn it. You'll be fine in the long run.

Don't be so hard on yourself. You're not the only one that makes mistakes about locations, you're just the one to admit it. I have sit up every night to watch it, but there's a lot I'm rusty on too. Don't sale yourself short.

I kind of pride myself that I learned where Vancouver was in 5th grade geography. There was a good reason why my mother told me to pay attention and not fall asleep in class.
