Can I teach myself gymnastics?

Now, before you all start yelling at me, and insisting that I'm nuts, understand that I mean rhythmic gymnastics. I have no intention of doing aerial tricks, beam routines, or going on the bars. I'm pretty flexible, and I used to do ballet, so I'm graceful, but firm, with a lean body and muscles. I'm interested in the ball tricks, and the ribbons, too. I actually taught myself ballet, up to pirouettes, before my parents let me take lessons, and my teacher was astounded that I learned it by myself, with no errors whatsoever. So, I DO have the potential to teach myself rhythmic gymnastics, too. Oh, Gods, I feel like I'm bragging...-_-" Sorry 'bout that.
I just want to know if any of you are in my position, and if you think it's possible. My parents are horrified I want to learn this, insisting that a 'good' girl doesn't do such 'awful' things with that revealing attire. But I don't care. I will learn it.
Whaddaya all think?
P.S. I may try artistic. Which is harder?

First, Artistic Vs. Rhythmic. Being an Artistic (male) gymnast, in my eyes, artistic is harder as it has more events. But Rhythmic is basically a completely different sport, as it is a lot more grace and flexibility then power.

Now, teaching yourself rhythmic can be very difficult. Learning the skills, the moves, how to balance the ball, how to hold it etc, can be difficult to teach yourself, but not impossible. But, here is the thing. If you want to get anywhere with Rhythmic gymnastics (i.e National, World, Olympic, and other big competitions) you WILL need an experienced coach, otherwise it will be very difficult to get anywhere.
