They alternate every two years. The winter Olympics are 4 years apart, the summer Olympics are 4 years apart. Like so, 2014 are the winter games, 2016 are the summer games, then in 2018 the winter games, 2020 will have the summer games, and so on. It used to be both in the same year, it was changed to this format a few years ago.

After 1992, they separated the Winter and Summer Games so they weren't in the same year. Each games is held every 4 years but in alternate cycles so there is an Olympiad (either Summer or Winter) every 2 calendar years.

the winter games are being held this year. not the summer games. The summer games will be held in 2016.

They have summer and winter. The summer ones are big and now the Paralympic follow it same city both summer and winter. I know it was before the Paralympic had strong link to make sure it followed the same city.
